When you imagine using alternative energy and living off the grid, do you think you will have to give up your TV or freezer to live that way?Is this only for hippies, survivalists, or techno-anti Luddites wanting to live with less?Nope.  Living off the grid with home power is a possibility open to you or anyone.If you need high-power, for freezers, TV and such, you build a bigger system to drive them.It is not to say.

Because of increased demand driven by the cost of gas and the economy, demand for renewable energy technology has soared, leading to more efficient and easy to use components. Thus, anyone caring about their carbon footprint and eneergy consumption has an option of living off the grid.  

Using home power to produce electricity is fairly simple.A power source is what you need.  Sun, wind and water are the big three right now for home power.Find the components that fit the one(s) best suited for you.A low voltage direct current is harnessed through the components.Through an inverter, current is converted from DC into usable house current (AC).  Excess current you generate can be stored in battery banks for retrieval during more high demand times or times when the direct energy source is unavailable.  

When living off the grid with renewable power resources, there is little special attention needed and is almost completely automated.  You do need to:

Tend to the maintenance of your batteries

Monitor your energy use to make sure you keep your supply more than your demand.

The main key to success in living off the grid is making sure you have a system built in a size to meet the demand of your energy needs. 

Living off the grid can be exhilarating.Alternative energy gives you a feeling of freedom like a breath of fresh air.You can help to combat global warming and take pride in doing it.Imagine a life without power outages.  

It is important to research and determine which are the best alternative energy sources for your geographical area, for example, the number of days of sun in your area, or average wind, but it is definitely worthwhile to learn how to live  off the grid and feel the rush of freedom being  off the grid can give.   

So many people are investigating renewable energy, these days, whether it’s passive solar, active solar or reduce home power bills.

Much of what is written is either a waste of trees or blows most budgets, so when it came to homemade solar panel systems I was super skeptical.

What I saw, confirmed my fears, a fair bit of what is published is impractical to build, there were though a few publications that offered genuine, well researched and practical information.

Amongst the group, the best of these would be Earth4Energy, which proved to be a comprehensive manual on how to build an integrated renewable power generation system for the average home.

The whole system utilizes recyclable materials, so is incredibly economic to put together, making it possible to have part of the system up in a weekend. The solar panel might take an extra weekend or two, by the time you have located the necessary bits and pieces, but but time is well spent when you think about what you will save long term.

For the handyman this package offers a wealth of information, instructions, pictures and diagrams which will allow virtually anyone to build a renewable power system, {comprising both wind and solar power, that will generate power from both solar and wind}.

These wind and solar systems are not created for mansions and don’t expect your first effort to power everything, it won’t unless you are very frugal, it was never designed to do that, but it could save you anywhere upto 30% on your power bills. That is just the start, once the first system is up, just build another.

This publication is an excellent piece of work, put together by a man who has done it and even if you are only just starting to think about building a renewable energy system, this book will quickly make you realise that it is quite simple to make your thoughts become a reality.

The globe as it is today is an energy hungry place and it’s imperative that we be searching renewable supplies of energy to provide that thirst. We should also get better means of applying the current sustainable energy technology that are already in place. We all need to be interested about the impact that is being put on our globe and how the high cost of energy is impacting us. The U.S. wastes energy at an frightful rate as if we feel we are entitled to it. We need to wake up and become more limited in our usage. . There are working propositions to these problems but how voluntary have people been to carry out these solutions at the present.

One of the more popular forms of sustainable energy is wind power. The price of the power it produces is turning really aggressive with established methods of energy output such as coal and natural gas. Wind Generators have been used for many years to produce power. They used to used on the farms to pump water and every farm had one back then. It is a known fact these days that the states of Texas, Kansas, and North Dakota have enough wind to furnish power for the whole U.S.

Corn over the past several years has been seen as a savior to our oil dependence. The ethanol that is made from corn is a clean burning energy source and crops can be grown year after year so it is renewable but at what cost. The cost of corn has gone up as the result of this, which is good for the farmer but bad for the consumer. Research has shown that prairie grass would do a better job than corn. In reality it generates more energy per acre than corn. Prairie grass grows wild. You don’t have to cultivate or tend to it. It is a chemical free crop that just needs to harvested and processed.

Another sustainable energy source we see and hear more of is solar power. You have the solar panels which convert sunlight into electricity and solar water heater to produce hot water. I’ve read about people who have placed solar energy systems on their homes in areas you wouldn’t think it would work, like Seattle. The payback figures for the system were impressive even for a mostly overcast area like this.

One of the things I like about solar is that it can give the power back into the peoples hands to a large degree. The control of power can be decentralized. Think about it, there hasn’t been a lot of money spent on the research and development so costs remain high and the cause doesn’t advance. Large corporations want to protect their profits and unfortunately it almost seems as though they’d do anything to make that happen.

We all know that oil isn’t going to last forever. If we don’t start doing something about it now than when. We need to get smart about what we are doing with our energy situation and begin to implement a new energy agenda. We can start to benefit from it now but we also need to think of how it is going to be of value to the next generation. Help out by doing something to make renewable energy something we can all enjoy.

In today’s tough economic times it is a thing of joy to see a business doing well, especially one that is in the business of good. Columbia Energy Partners (CEP) develops renewable energy projects such as wind and solar farms. They have partnered with Vestas and other significant industry giants to allow them to grow in this fiercely competitive market. This team of brilliant and experienced individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds is thriving during one of the worst economic situations in history. I say Kudos!

It had been a few months since I checked in with my friends at Columbia Energy Partners, so I was quite pleased to receive a last minute invite to their office “house warming” party. I must say the turnout was excellent, the people wonderful and the food splendid. It was a great opportunity to network with alternative energy pioneers in a town known for its green credentials.

There was a palpable sense of looming prosperity following the election of Obama. Many people were wearing Obama shirts and Obama posters covered the walls. It seems that the Alternative Energy crowd which has long been on the fringes, and has now found itself at the center, is filled with vigor and hope. You could see it in the eyes of everyone present, and it pushed the natural synic in me into hiding for an evening.

It was my sincere pleasure to meet people from all over the renewable energy market and as a direct result I will soon be doing a series of articles with Jeff Hawkins of Timna Energy Corp on how you can reduce your energy footprint. We will also be making a video of a residential solar PV system installation with Jeff. CEP is on the cusp of greatness, the excitement that was visible at their shin dig was obvious and even long term adversaries were in attendance looking to work with them. CEP looks to be moving ahead with quite a few exciting projects including a wind farm and an Algae from smokestack system that will help Portland General Electric clean the emissions of one of their existing coal fire plants.Thier future is bright.

The Algea plant itself is an interesting idea, that frankly I’m suprised has not gained wider acceptance in the energy market. it has a two fold benefit, it cleans the emissions from smokestacks reducing CO2 and other gasses, and it produces an algea that can be used for biofuels, as well as other “green” products. This single technology could drastically reduce the US CO2 emissions from existing coal plants. It seems like a no-brainer, and as CEP is showing, it is a fantastic business oportunity.
