For me the daily question is “How do I make my existence matter?”. I have a firm belief that the only way we live on past our own death is through the memories of others. There are two ways to that result, one is to be terrible, ruthless and merciless, to be hated. The other is to be helpful, kind and generous, to be loved. In my opinion it is easier to be ruthless than generous. So it is easier to be hated than loved. My own natural tendencies and talents put me into a venue (business) where cut-throat mercenary sensibilities are the norm. I have chosen a different path. My strength is solving complex problems. This has lead me to start many companies, and invent.

OK, so what? How does my beliefs of immortality relate to my strengths? Well, that has been somewhat difficult to reason through. But I have come to realization that I can do more good, and add more value to the world by helping others build a successful future for themselves and those they care for.

How? I have started consulting to start-up businesses who focus on green, eco and sustainability. I will help them bring products to the market, get the word out and innovate their industry.

Meanwhile on the home front, I have been working through several projects in the effort to make my home more sustainable. My ultimate goal is to have a completely self reliant “homestead”. My wife and I live on 5 acres of woods. This means that a large garden is out of the question, at least without cutting down most of the trees. This represents quite a challenge. Here on Mindzle I will try to document how I solve this problem using permaculture, aquaponics, solar electric and rainwater harvesting. Many other topics will likely be covered such as composting and the raising of chickens. I am excited by the challenges now before me and hope that you will follow along and join in the conversation.

David Artsmith  -  Disposable beverage coasters are generally used in bars and restaurants as a cheap and effective way of keeping condensation off of the tables. They can consist of any inexpensive material, although usually it is something that absorbs water. The most common disposable coaster is a cocktail napkin slipped under a beverage.

The good news is that most of the materials that would make a good disposable coaster are biodegradable, such as paper or cork. That means even though they create a lot of unnecessary trash, it won’t take much for nature to re-incorporate them back into the environment.

The real problem with these beverage coasters is that they are a symptom of a philosophical error in our society’s way of thinking. Standing at the threshold of mechanization, we are a society that produces, and consumes. It’s a matter of simple convenience, disposable items don’t have to be washed, they don’t have to be taken care of, and they can simply be tossed away.

Our society has become a mass produced of temporarily useful waste. And instead of developing new thoughts and innovations, we instead waste our time with the mindless production of consumables.

Unfortunately this is a problem which is fairly inherent to the way the world works. The reason it exists, is because it is simply cheaper to build disposable things.

It is also economic. Companies want us to buy many products over the course of our lives, rather than simply purchasing one product. Even if the one product is priced higher, the payments for disposable drink coasters made over the course of a life will still add up to be larger, and more viable for a companies long term growth.

As technology increases, these disposable accessories will become cheaper and easier. Instead of looking for the next great drink coaster, we are going to search endlessly for the cheapest, ugliest, and most disposable coaster. In this way we will make our world ugly, and pathetic. In effect, we will be developing a disposable world.

When it comes to any form of solar energy, what automatically comes to ones mind are cost efficiency and convenience. Therefore many modern homes in the United States have at least one solar powered object within their households. With the evolution and success of the many solar powered products and outdoor lighting in the world today, it was only a matter of time before people decided that solar power could be used in order to generate energy towards something on a larger scale. Particle size is also used in the case of conglomerates and breccias or in the case of individual stones. This transformation is known as the rock cycle.

We classify rocks and minerals in several different ways. These include the method of formation, the size and type of particles in a rock, and by the types of minerals or the chemical composition. This general typing consists of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Rocks such as breccias and conglomerates gain their designation from the particle size in their structures. Geology designates the change from one type of rock into another as the rock cycle.

Igneous rocks originate from molten materials, and consists of two different types. These are the volcanic rocks, also termed extrusive rocks, formed from magma that flows to the surface or from eruption ejected rocks like pumice and basalt. Plutonic rocks (intrusive rocks) form more slowly as magma cools within the Earth’s crust and forms crystals.

Rocks are called sedimentary when they are formed by sediment from clastic elements, from plant and other organic residue or from precipitation, or evaporites, compacted into rocks. This occurs near the surface and most sedimentary rocks form from mud, e.g. mudstone, shale, and siltstone. Sandstones are the next most common and finally there are the rocks derived from carbonate compounds, such as limestone and dolostone.

When rocks are subjected to higher pressures and temperatures than those at the surface and those from which they originally formed, they are designated as metamorphic rocks. Things must be extreme so that minerals are changed into different chemical structures, in ways that might be recrystalized.

Small differences separate the natural stone classes into subgroups that are largely arbitrary points on a spectrum. Many claim this produces too many names while others argue that subtle differences occur often and are significant enough to demand specific nomenclature.

Color

Sedimentary rocks like common red sandstones and limestones gain color from hematite or ferric oxide, others from carbonates. Yellow and brown rocks come from the presence of limonite and goethite, while black comes from manganese oxide, asphalt and other carbon substances in the sediment. Glauconite and chlorite produce greenish rocks while phosphate or fluorite content makes blue rocks.

Significance

Rocks play a significant power in shaping both human culture and human technology. Human beings have used stone for generations, and its use in building represents some of our oldest technology. Mining metal ore changed societies based on what was available and prehistoric time is divided into the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
